Premarital Counseling

Make it a goal to create a marriage that feels like the safest place on earth."
Investing in premarital counseling can save years of heartache and conflict.

I always tell clients that the greatest barometer for a successful marriage revolves around conflict resolution and communicated expectations.  Premarital counseling provides the space for couples to understand each other's communication styles, while agreeing upon expectations for various aspects of life, including but not limited to sex, finances and roles.  By discussing differences and expectations before marriage, you and your partner are essentially building the foundations for a successful relationship.  It will provide you and your partner with a better understanding of each other as well as yourself so that each individual could provide the highest level of support.

I utilize Symbis to help guide our sessions--after each partner fills out a questionnaire, I will generate a 15 page report that is packed with practical and personalized insights.  It highlights 5 areas: 1) Marriage Momentum: which provides an entire report based on each partner's history and personality, 2) Mindset: with research revealing 5 potential attitudes towards marriage, the report will include descriptions for each and how well it meshes with one another, 3) Wellbeing: which reveals the psychological, emotional and spiritual health of each partner, also indicating potential "caution flags," which may need to be explored, 4) Context: which reveals each person's social support, financial picture, as well as family of origin.  Second marriages and blended families are also addressed, and 5) Dynamics: which touches on personalities and how each partner views issues including love, sex, communication, conflict, attitude and spirituality.

While I recommend at least 6 sessions, on average I have seen couples in premarital counseling for up to 10 sessions.  Certainly each couple varies and my role is to collaborate with you to find out the perfect amount of sessions you would like.
